What (and what not) to do if you’ve been terminated
Don’t sign anything without review by legal counsel. The first offer is rarely the best offer.
At the termination, meeting ask for copies of:
- the termination letter
- your employment agreement
- your most recent pay statement showing deductions and remittances
- the record of employment
Ask for the reason for termination but don’t argue with your former employer. Listen only.
Following the termination meeting, gather your personal effects. You don’t want these things to be lost or damaged.
Apply for Employment Insurance Benefits.
Review your life insurance coverage as group coverage may expire or be convertible shortly after the date of termination.
